they are picking on susan rice because she is a woman. but i do think these things are heating up so quickly that they better not get backed into corners that they can't get backed out of. >> the truth of the matter is that they have to have this meeting. they have to sit down and discuss things where the cameras aren't there. >> however, we know from history with this president and these congressional leaders that most of the real work is going to get done on the phone with the house speaker and the president and their aids. so that is the reality this is an opening gambit and probably not much more. i talked to a good source here asking do you think if she is nominated you do overcome a filibuster and the answer was yes. if anybody wanted to watch two old white guys beat up on a black woman i'll sell tickets to that. there is politics all around here. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> well, let us know what you think about this. i'm tweeting about this already. up next why did the justice department keep the president in the dark about the petreaus scandal. plus the investigation of paula bro

the killings in benghazi the u.s. ambassador to the united nations susan rice said what she said about the spontaneous reaction? >> well, i've always thought based on what we heard from the very start that there was a big disconnect between the information i thought i was looking at and what the president said yesterday they had. i thought the most interesting thing in the president's comments yesterday was that susan rice had all of the information they had and related all of that information. that just doesn't seem reasonable to me. if they did -- if that was all the information they had, i wonder why somebody at the white house wasn't asking more questions. and that may be the biggest question here as we go forward. >> are you with some of those republicans like senator mccain, senator lindsey graham who will do everything in their power to block her nomination as secretary of state if it goes forward? >> well, i think again, the question there is what did ambassador rice know? why is that what she knew? and why was she the person sent out to represent the administration? the presid

.s. -- united nations ambassador susan rice for the benghazi response. here is what the president said. >> as i've said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. >> okay. so it took senator john mccain about an hour to make it to the s senate floor to offer a response. >> that statement is really remarkable in that if the president thinks that we are picking on people, he really does not have any idea of how serious this issue is. >> seems like the testosterone-fueled rhetoric over benghazi is sort of getting out of control. former cia operative bob behr joins us this morning. good morning, bob. >> good morning. >> i want to make it clear to our viewers what lawmakers want to figure out. there are three separate hearings about to take place today. this is what they're trying to figure out. one, why didn't the united states increase security in libya? two, did the obama administration

with this term that could be fed to the public. susan rice said that this was what she was cleared to use when she spoke by television a few days after the attack. >> some people are calling this a cover-up, including white house aids of covering it up, someone removed the terror link from the talking points that was initially handed out. a did that happen, and if it did happen, why? >> how in this process of removing the specific names of these extremist groups including al qaeda affiliate, a local liberal group, was there any one individual or one agency that did this? this went through an interagency process in washington 1/2. it had to be signed off by various members of the white house, members of the nfc. the only words they changed along with the state department was changing the words to diplomatic facility in the -- from the mission. and so they had nothing to do with the intelligence assessment at all. so there's still some question of exactly where in this process that the names were changed to the more generic reference to terror. >> you're not in new york city, that skyline behind

to the job. susan rice is another person who has been mentioned who has less kind of gravitas on capitol hill, compared to john kerry. my guess is president obama will try to find someone relatively comparable who can shine in the media, who can do well with members of capitol hill as they deal with the challenges abroad. >> the democrats kept control of the senate, wolf. it is slightly easier when he's talking about confirmees. but the benghazi dustup put a tarnish on susan rice. does that have a bomb ofpotenti more bruising confirmation fight? >> the television appearance, five sunday talk shows in which she said what she said and given how angry the republicans are on this whole benghazi thing, the accusations they're making and they're going after her directly, i don't know if the president wants to start off a second term with a bruising confirmation battle for susan rice. so from her perspective, i think it has hurt her. john kerry, he did a pretty good job helping in the debates. i think he's got a good shot at it. we'll see if anybody else emerges as a candidate. >> republican senator

't think we can defend the consulate. of course they know they sent susan rice out to say that this was a spontaneous demonstration triggered by a hateful video. the president's repeated it several times. when we knew it was not true. i was on "face the nation" that sunday and the president of the libyan national assembly came on right away and said this is an al qaeda attack. there was no demonstration. what they are trying to sell flies in the face of the facts. what they were trying to sell is al qaeda's on the run because we got bin laden. al qaeda is coming back everywhere. you know that, piers. they have taken over parts of mali. they are all through libya. they are on a comeback in iraq. they are coming into syria in droves, by the way, while we watch 34,000 people being massacred. so of course our veterans, of course our men and women in the military don't trust this commander in chief and they have no reason to do so. >> if mitt romney wins the election, what do you think in the end will have been the key determining factor? >> i think the first debate obviously.
